Music rhythm games have taken the videogame world by storm. From Dance Dance Revolution to Guitar Hero and Rock Band, there’s something for just about everyone. Next year, one more piece of the pie will be filled in with Scratch: The Ultimate DJ. This game isn’t focused on dancing or playing with a toy guitar. Scratch is all about urban hip-hop music and infusing your creativity into the game with a unique turntable peripheral. To learn more about the game, we went to Dan Lehrich, creator of Scratch: The Ultimate DJ.
IGN: Traditional music rhythm games specify what notes and when you should play. This design doesn’t seem to mesh well with the idea of using a turntable to improvise. How exactly will the gameplay and scoring work in Scratch?
Dan Lehrich: One of the things that I am most excited about with Scratch is the way that we are able to introduce elements of creativity and improvisation into a genre that has traditionally been built around “Simon Says” style gameplay. We’ve worked very hard to develop an experience that blends these elements with the fast-paced arcade experience that people expect from a rhythm game. Hopefully we’ve created something that feels instantly familiar, but with layers of depth that people have not yet seen in this space. It’s a fine line between “game” and “instrument”, and I think we walk it with grace.
There are two complimentary activities that make up Scratch’s core experience: the button-press gameplay and the scratching.
Similar to other rhythm music games, button patterns move down the screen and they must be pressed in time with the music. In each song, we chart out the most interesting pathway through the music so that you are always jamming along with the coolest and most prominent parts of the songs. Instead of being stuck with a single instrument, you end up controlling various instruments at different points in time. Each song is its own custom-built experience..» Full Story on Sudden Link

Scratch: The Ultimate DJ(Xbox 360)
There has been speculation for months now that Activision was planning on bringing other musical instruments and genres into the “Hero” game franchise, spinning the titles off from traditional rock n’ roll band experiences into a more diverse set of musical tastes. Now, we have confirmation of Activision’s first game to try this new direction, as official word has come for DJ Hero. » Full Story on The Game Reviews .

Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin was rumored to be making a guest appearance on “Saturday Night Live” last night. The rumors were a bust. But I did tune in long enough to watch the politically-themed, 30-minute series of sketches make a note to callout — and mock! — music game fans. » Full Story on MTV Multiplayer.

SCRATCH: THE ULTIMATE DJ ANNOUNCED

Scratch: The Ultimate DJ(Xbox 360)
Beating the competition to the punch with a formal announcement this week, Genius Products and Genco Media will be partnering with 7 Studios and QD3 to release Scratch: The Ultimate DJ for Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii in spring 2009.
Backed by creative input from legendary hip-hop producer Quincy Jones III - who’s worked with the likes of Tupac Shakur, LL Cool J, and Ice Cube, to name a few - Scratch will feature original recordings from major urban artists and the ability to tweak the songs on the fly. The game will utilize a realistic turntable peripheral, called the Scratch Deck, that combines Rock Band-like rhythmic note input with real-time song manipulation and DJ tricks. The device is being created by Numark, the world’s largest DJ equipment manufacturer.
“With the recent success of music-driven videogames and the dominance of urban culture in the youth market, the potential for Scratch is endless,” said Jones in a prepared statement. “Having spent 20 years as a music producer for artists such as Tupac, LL, and Ice Cube, it is rewarding to work with 7 Studios, Genius and Genco to ensure that there is authenticity in every detail of this game.”
A track list and full feature set for Scratch hasn’t been announced, but the game is slated for release next spring. Don’t be surprised if more DJ rhythm game news sprouts up in the coming months.
Last month, Activision acquired U.K. B-Boy developer FreestyleGames to work on unspecified music games, but it has yet to announce its trademarked DJ Hero or any turntable-related game officially. It’s safe to say gamers can likely expect a burgeoning hip-hop flavored rhythm game face-off to erupt in the near future. Whether it will reach the intensity of the Guitar Hero vs. Rock Band rivalry is hard to say. .. » Full Story on The Escapist
